Total Literacy Campaign (TLC)

The state of Jammu & Kashmir has a population of 1,01,43,700 souls with a population density of 99 person per sq. km and the sex ratio of 900 females per thousand males. The literacy rate in the state is only 55.50% against 64.84% at All India Level. The disappointed fact is that the state has a low level of socio-economic indicators such as low level of sex ratio, higher infant mortality and low literacy rate.
Low level of literacy is one of the key socio-economic factors of the underdevelopment. In order to bring the illiteracy to the lowest possible level, the Total Literacy Campaign' has been devised as a tool by the NLM to fight with the problem of illiteracy by way of imparting reading, writing and numeracy skills to the productive age group of 15 to 35 years.
The Total Literacy Campaign has been initiated in six districts of Kashmir valley with support and guidance of National Literacy Mission (NLM), J&K State Government and State Resource Centre (SRC) Kashmir University.
